The Old Rectory

Austrians take their skiing very seriously. You can always tell winter is near when the lawn mowers are put away and the skis come out of the garage. This area boasts some great ski names such as Franz Klammer, Fritz Strobl, Hermann Maier, and the olympic ski jumper Thomas Morgenstern.

Above, guests leave their two little girls ( three and five year old ) in the safe hands of a Katschberg ski school and head up to the big peaks. At the end of the morning's session the girl's improvement was amazing. This was only their second lesson. As you can probably tell from the video, I still need a few more lessons.

We have some fantastic ski areas within a 40 km radius of Altersberg. The closest is Goldeck, just 8 kms across the valley. It has the longest black run in all of Austria. The Mölltal Gletscher, open most of the year lies about 38 kms from our house. It is quite a bit higher than other ski areas and therefore the snow will be better in late Spring and early Autumn. Innerkrems, another local favourite is 27 kms north west up a beautiful winding road. The video above was shot at Katschberg about 30 kms from here, and a fast run on the A10 motorway. The area lies between two big mountains with plenty of lifts and challenging runs. The A1 added two years ago is one of the longest descents in Austria ( 6 kms ).

All of these areas have good English speaking ski schools and are very safe and child friendly. I suggest you do as my friend did, drop off the small amateurs for a morning's class and have a great day on the piste.
